Water Heater Buying Guide for Jabalpur Homes: Instant vs Storage & Capacity Chart

Instant or storage? How many litres for your family? What to check before installation? A plain guide from a Jabalpur shop that has been fitting geysers since 1994.

September is here, and Jabalpur mornings will start turning cold soon. The most common mistake we see is people choosing a geyser by price alone — and then finding out it is too small for the family, or too big for a kitchen.

Here is the same advice we give across the counter.

Instant or storage — decide this first

Instant water heater (1 to 3 litres)

Heats water as the tap runs. Nothing is stored. Small, fits in tight spaces.

Right for kitchen sinks and washbasins. Not enough for bathing.

Storage water heater (6 to 25 litres)

Heats water and keeps it hot in a tank, ready when you need it.

Right for bathing, whether you use a bucket or a shower.

Many homes end up with both — storage in the bathroom, instant in the
kitchen. It is not extra spending. They do different jobs.

Capacity guide

One bucket needs roughly 15 litres of hot water, which you then mix with cold. Going by that:

  • 1 to 3 litres — kitchen sink or washbasin only (instant)
  • 6 to 10 litres — two people, bucket bath
  • 10 to 15 litres — family of four, bucket bath
  • 15 litres — two people using a shower
  • 25 litres — four people using showers, or a joint family

Showers use far more hot water than buckets. If your family uses showers, size up. A 10 litre tank will not stretch to four showers.

Three checks before installation

Nobody tells you this when you buy online, and it causes trouble later.

Wiring

An instant geyser draws 3000 watts, which means 13 amps. It needs a 15 amp socket and thick wire. Older Jabalpur homes often have 5 amp wiring, and running a geyser on that will heat the wire.

We check the wiring before fitting.

Wall

A filled storage geyser is heavy. The wall must take that weight. Plywood partitions and thin walls are not suitable.

Water pressure

Upper floors, flats and homes with a pressure pump have higher water pressure. Most geysers handle 6 bar. An 8 bar rating is safer for such homes.

Electricity

Instant geysers are 3000 watts but only run while the tap is open. Storage geysers are 2000 watts and switch off once the water is hot.

Two things reduce running cost — a BEE 5 star rating and good PUF insulation. Better insulation keeps water hot for hours, so the heater switches on less often.

Warranty — read it in three parts

A geyser warranty is not one number. It has three:

  • Tank — the one that matters most. Look for 5 to 7 years
  • Heating element — usually 2 to 3 years
  • Product — usually 2 years

If the tank corrodes, the whole unit is replaced. That is why tank warranty matters more than the rest.

Before you buy new, get the old one checked

Most faults are repairable — a burnt element, a faulty thermostat, a leak, or water not heating. Only a corroded tank means you need a new geyser.

Get your geyser serviced in October, before the season starts. Service centres get busy once the cold sets in.
